Professor Elijah Millgram (Utah) will deliver a talk on "Progressive Necessity".

Abstract

A promising alternative to the familiar attempts to understand
modality semantically -- that is, by developing theories of what
sentences containing "coulds", "woulds" and so on *mean* -- is to
investigate the functionality of modal cognition. I advance the
hypothesis that thinking about necessity is an attention management
technique, and argue for a view anticipated by the Victorian
philosopher of science William Whewell: that if it is, we should
expect necessity to be *progressive*: on average, over time, more and
more facts will become necessary, and, likewise, on average, over
time, more and more facts will be known a priori.
